Kiko addresses soaring chili prices, calls for better agricultural planning

admin January 9, 2026

SENATOR Kiko Pangilinan has issued a statement addressing the recent surge in chili prices, with siling labuyo reaching as high as ₱1,000 per kilo.

Pangilinan attributed the high prices to basic supply chain issues, noting that rainy weather often leads to reduced supply and, consequently, higher prices.

Pangilinan highlighted that over two billion pesos have been allocated in the 2026 national budget for high-value crops like chili.

He expressed support for the Department of Agriculture’s proposed solutions to lower the rising chili prices, which include expanding chili cultivation to more areas beyond Bicol, utilizing greenhouses and proper storage to protect crops from typhoons, and carefully timing the planting and harvesting of chili.

The Senator emphasized the importance of accurate and meaningful data collection to avoid price shocks. “Let’s tame the temperamental prices of food by having a more thorough plan for planting, seeds, infrastructure, and regular updates to the public on the supply and price of said crops,” Pangilinan stated.

Pangilinan’s statement underscores the need for improved agricultural planning and infrastructure to stabilize food prices and ensure a consistent supply of essential commodities.
