THE Philippine volleyball community is in mourning following the sudden passing of Ike Barilea, a promising member of the Alas Pilipinas men’s national team program. He was just 21 years old.
The national volleyball team announced Barilea’s death on Tuesday in a heartfelt Facebook post, leaving teammates, friends, and fans in shock. The cause of death was not disclosed.
“The court feels emptier, and our hearts heavier. Rest easy, ALAS IKE BARILEA. Thank you for the laughter, the memories, and the heart you gave to the team. Heaven gained an angel, but we lost a piece of ours. Fly high, our dear ALAS,” the team shared on social media.
Barilea, who had just celebrated his 21st birthday two days prior, was a rising star in the sport. A talented spiker hailing from Negros, he first captured the attention of volleyball enthusiasts during the 2025 U21 National Finals. His exceptional performance led 1Silay Volleyball Club to a bronze finish, earning him a coveted spot in the initial Alas Pilipinas men’s volleyball pool for the upcoming 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship, which will be hosted by the Philippines.
Beyond his national team aspirations, Barilea also gained valuable experience on the international stage, representing Cignal in the 2025 AVC Men’s Champions League in Japan. He previously showcased his skills in the Spikers’ Turf, playing for Santa Rosa City during the 2022 season.
“Friends, teammates, and fans remembered Barilea as a dedicated athlete whose passion, energy, and commitment left a mark on Philippine volleyball,” a statement on the Spikers’ Turf website read. His enthusiasm for the game and his unwavering dedication to his team will be deeply missed.
The volleyball community has lost a bright talent, and Barilea’s memory will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration for aspiring athletes across the Philippines.
