DOT condemns killing of Japanese nationals, warns of tourism impact

admin August 19, 2025

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) has strongly condemned the recent killing of two Japanese nationals in Manila, expressing concern that the incident has already led to travel warnings from several embassies.

The DOT emphasized the potential negative impact on tourist confidence and the Philippines’ reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.

“We note with deep concern that recent events have already prompted advisories from foreign embassies in the country’s top visitor source markets, which could adversely affect tourist confidence and the Philippines’ image as a safe and welcoming destination,” the DOT said in a statement.

The DOT urged the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct a “swift and thorough” investigation into the August 15 shooting along Malvar Street in Malate.

The city government of Manila has stated it is coordinating with the PNP to identify the perpetrators and ensure the safety of both residents and tourists. The DOT’s statement underscores the importance of a swift resolution to mitigate any long-term damage to the country’s tourism industry.
