PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the results of the 2024 Census of Population and Housing, revealing a significant population increase in the Philippines.
According to Proclamation 973, the country’s population reached 112,729,484 as of July 1, 2024, marking a 3.69 million increase from the 109,035,343 recorded on May 1, 2020, based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
This official population count, as mandated by Batas Pambansa 72, will be used for all purposes.
The 2024 Census, conducted from July to September 2024 with July 1 as the reference date, highlights a substantial growth in the Philippine population over a four-year period.
This growth comes despite a reported fertility rate of 1.9 children per woman in 2025, according to a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report. The UNFPA report also noted persistently high rates of unintended pregnancies and difficulties in achieving desired family sizes across 14 surveyed countries, including the Philippines.
The Commission on Population and Development (PopCom) provided further context, reporting a concerning increase in teenage pregnancies. The number of births to girls aged 10-14 rose from over 2,000 in 2019 to over 3,300 in 2023. The significant population increase, coupled with these demographic trends, presents challenges and opportunities for the Philippines in terms of resource allocation, infrastructure development, and social services.
