A MAGNITUDE 5.5 earthquake struck offshore Ilocos Norte on Tuesday morning at approximately 10:38 a.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The tectonic earthquake, with its epicenter located in the waters near Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, had a depth of 27 kilometers.
Phivolcs reported that Intensity IV was felt in several areas, including Claveria, Cagayan; San Nicolas and Solsona, Ilocos Norte; and Sinait and Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. Weaker intensities were recorded in other nearby provinces, with Intensity I felt in Candon, Ilocos Sur and Ilagan, Isabela.
While no significant damage is anticipated, Phivolcs warned of the possibility of aftershocks.
The relatively deep depth of the earthquake likely contributed to the limited intensity experienced in populated areas.
Authorities are monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond to any potential needs. Residents in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and to take appropriate precautions in case of aftershocks. Further updates will be provided by Phivolcs as the situation develops.
