NEWLY elected Representatives Leila de Lima (ML Party-list) and Chel Diokno (Akbayan) have joined the minority bloc in the 20th Congress, solidifying their commitment to acting as a check on the Marcos Jr. administration.
De Lima, a vocal critic of the administration, has consistently stated her intention to serve as a “fiscalizer,” scrutinizing government policies, programs, and legislative agendas.
Despite offers to join the majority bloc, she affirmed her preference for an independent role within the minority, emphasizing that this position best allows her to fulfill her commitment to oversight. Diokno echoed this sentiment, asserting that the Akbayan party-list is best positioned within the minority to effectively advocate for critical issues that might otherwise be overlooked by the majority.
The decision by De Lima and Diokno, along with their four fellow party-list representatives, to align themselves with the minority bloc adds significant weight to Representative Marcelino Libanan’s bid for minority leader.
Libanan, who served as minority leader in the 19th Congress, now has the support of 26 lawmakers, including the four representatives from ML and Akbayan.
This strategic alignment suggests a concerted effort within the minority bloc to provide robust oversight and to champion issues that prioritize the needs of the Filipino people.
The presence of prominent figures like De Lima and Diokno in the minority is expected to significantly influence the legislative process and provide a strong counterbalance to the administration’s agenda.
