A 20-year-old delivery rider died on Monday after collapsing while waiting in line for a government financial assistance payout at the Marikina Sports Center.
According to Marikina City police public information officer Capt. Julius Criste, the victim fell unconscious while queuing for the “ayuda.”
The victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival shortly after 5 p.m.
Initial medical findings revealed dilated pupils and the absence of a pulse upon arrival at the hospital. Captain Criste stated that while the victim’s identity has not been publicly released, there was no evidence of a stampede or overcrowding at the distribution site. He emphasized that the line of beneficiaries was not excessively long.
Marikina police reported that the victim’s family has chosen not to pursue an investigation, believing his death was due to natural causes.
While the exact cause of death is still pending further medical examination, the incident highlights the potential health risks associated with long waits for essential services, particularly among individuals already facing economic hardship. The city government may review its aid distribution processes to mitigate similar occurrences in the future.
