THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested a vlogger for manipulating a statement by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and falsely portraying him as supporting drug legalization.

The vlogger’s actions highlight the growing problem of online misinformation and the legal consequences of spreading false information.

The arrest followed the discovery of an altered social media post shared on Facebook.

The NBI’s investigation led to the vlogger’s apprehension and a subsequent confession. The individual admitted to profiting from the dissemination of the fabricated content, although the amount earned was reportedly minimal. The vlogger also expressed remorse and pleaded for President Marcos’ forgiveness.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago emphasized the agency’s commitment to pursuing individuals who spread false information online. He highlighted the collaboration with Facebook and TikTok in identifying and arresting those responsible for creating and sharing manipulated content.

Director Santiago issued a strong warning, stating that the NBI will continue to actively investigate and prosecute those involved in the creation and distribution of fake news.

Director Santiago urged the public to practice caution and critical thinking when engaging with online content. He stressed the importance of verifying information before sharing it, emphasizing that spreading false information is a crime with serious legal ramifications.

The arrested vlogger’s case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of online misinformation. Director Santiago cautioned that spreading false information is not a trivial matter and carries significant legal penalties. He used the vlogger’s regret as a cautionary example of the repercussions that can follow.

The suspect is now facing charges under Article 152 of the Revised Penal Code, in conjunction with the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. A conviction could result in a prison sentence of six months to six years and a fine of up to P200,000. This case sets a significant precedent, demonstrating the NBI’s determination to combat the spread of misinformation and hold those responsible accountable. The arrest underscores the agency’s commitment to ensuring the accuracy and integrity of online information.
