FORMER Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte is now detained at Scheveningen Prison in The Hague, Netherlands, awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity related to his anti-drug campaign.
Duterte arrived in the Netherlands from Dubai and was transferred to the prison on the evening of March 12th. His supporters gathered outside the prison, shouting their support.
The ICC issued a warrant of arrest against Duterte, accusing him of creating and arming death squads involved in the killings of suspected drug users and sellers. He is expected to appear before an ICC judge in the coming days for an initial hearing.
Vice President Sara Duterte flew to the Netherlands to meet with her father and his legal team. The Philippine Embassy in The Hague provided assistance, including clothing and care packages.
Following Duterte’s detention, the Pre-Trial Chamber will hold a hearing to confirm his identity, ensure he understands the charges, and set a date for a confirmation of charges hearing, which will determine whether the case will proceed to trial.
The trial, if it proceeds, will take place in The Hague.
