THE Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) will represent the Senate in Supreme Court petitions related to the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, Senate President Francis “Chiz” G. Escudero announced Wednesday.
During a press conference, Escudero confirmed that the Senate had referred several petitions to the OSG. These include a petition from Duterte allies seeking a court order to halt the impeachment trial, a separate petition filed by Duterte herself challenging the complaint’s constitutionality, and a petition for mandamus urging the Senate to convene as an impeachment court.
“We referred the matter to the Solicitor General’s office,” Escudero stated. “As the government lawyer, the OSG will answer, appear, and handle the case on behalf of the Senate.”
He added that he had already contacted the OSG to ensure their representation before the Supreme Court. The statement was released by the Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau. The ongoing legal battle adds another layer of complexity to the already highly charged political situation.
