Probe launched after US surveillance plane crash in Maguindanao kills four

admin February 7, 2025

A US-contracted surveillance plane crashed in Maguindanao del Sur, southern Philippines, on Thursday morning, killing all four personnel on board, according to US Indo-Pacific Command.

The victims include one US Marine and three defense contractors. The identities and nationalities of the contractors remain unconfirmed.

The aircraft, a Beechcraft King Air 350, was conducting a routine intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) mission at the request of the Philippine government when the accident occurred. Images from the crash site, showing the wreckage in a rice field, have been confirmed by US defense officials. The plane is registered to Metrea Special Aerospace ISR, Inc., a company that provides ISR solutions to defense partners.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. The incident comes just one day after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke with his Philippine counterpart, Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro, Jr., to discuss regional security concerns, including deterrence in the South China Sea.

The timing of the crash raises questions about its potential impact on ongoing US-Philippines military cooperation.
