PH government monitors potential US aid freeze

admin January 25, 2025

THE Philippine government is closely monitoring a potential freeze on US foreign aid following a “stop-work” order issued by the US State Department.

The order, effective immediately, halts both new and existing aid programs pending a 90-day review by the US government to ensure alignment with its foreign policy goals.

The review was initiated by President Donald Trump, who was sworn in for a second term on Monday (Tuesday in the Philippines).

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) stated that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will liaise with US counterparts to assess the impact on the Philippines.

The US is the world’s largest single donor of foreign aid, having disbursed $72 billion in fiscal year 2023. The potential implications of this aid freeze for the Philippines, a significant recipient of US assistance, are currently being evaluated.
