Hontiveros backs bill establishing Muslim prayer rooms in public spaces

admin January 24, 2025

SENATOR Risa Hontiveros has voiced strong support for Senate Bill No. 2288, which mandates the establishment of Muslim prayer rooms in all public offices and establishments nationwide. The bill, introduced by Senator Mark Villar and sponsored by Senator Robinhood Padilla, was the subject of a public hearing on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

During the hearing, Senator Hontiveros emphasized her belief in the importance of providing spaces for all Filipinos to practice their faith. “I am here to support this bill because I believe that there should be a space and time for all Filipinos in the country,” she stated. Her endorsement underscores the growing momentum behind the measure, which aims to promote religious inclusivity and accommodate the needs of the Muslim community.

Senator Hontiveros also commended Senator Padilla for his advocacy work on women’s rights and Muslim affairs, stating that she supports his numerous initiatives in these areas. This bipartisan support signals a potential for swift passage of the bill, which has gained significant traction in recent weeks.

The proposed legislation seeks to address the practical challenges faced by Muslim Filipinos in observing their religious practices, particularly in workplaces and public spaces.

The provision of dedicated prayer rooms is seen as a crucial step towards fostering a more inclusive and respectful environment for all citizens. The bill’s proponents argue that it will not only benefit the Muslim community but also contribute to a more harmonious and unified nation.

The public hearing saw various stakeholders present their views on the bill, including representatives from religious organizations, civil society groups, and government agencies.

The next steps in the legislative process will involve further deliberations and potential amendments before the bill is put to a vote. The outcome of this legislation is being closely watched as an indicator of the government’s commitment to religious freedom and inclusivity.
