OFW Party List Rep. Magsino sets priorities for Filipino seafarers in town hall meeting

admin December 1, 2024

REPRESENTATIVE Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino of the OFW Party List led a first ever town hall meeting with the seafaring community, emphasizing the need to address the challenges faced by Filipino seafarers.

“Our seafarers are not just workers; they are heroes. Their sacrifices keep the world’s economy moving and support millions of Filipino families. It’s time we give back to them what they truly deserve,” Magsino said.

The meeting focused on key issues such as outdated government policies, particularly the POEA Standard Employment Contract for Seafarers, ill effects of prolonged separations from families, and exploitative working conditions. These discussions highlighted the importance of Republic Act No. 12021, or the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, which provides legal protections and improved working conditions.

Magsino stressed that implementing the law’s provisions effectively is a critical next step.

“Passing the law was a battle won, but the work is far from over. Your voices must be heard as the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) are drafted,” she said, committing to represent seafarers’ concerns to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) while Representatives from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) expressed their full commitment to addressing the issues raised during the consultation.

Filipino seafarers play a vital role in global trade while their remittances significantly contribute to the Philippine economy. Despite this, many face harsh working conditions and insufficient support. Magsino reiterated the need for reforms, including modernizing training programs, ensuring access to healthcare, and providing educational assistance for seafarers’ families.

“The neglect of our seafarers must end,” she stated. “These are rights you have earned, and I will work to ensure they are delivered.”

Furthermore, Magsino committed to amplify the voices of Filipino seafarers in Congress, emphasizing that they are a critical segment of Overseas Filipino Workers.
