THE OFW Partylist, through Representative Marissa Del Mar Magsino, has expressed deep concern over the reported possibility of mass deportations affecting 300,000 undocumented Filipinos in the United States.
While acknowledging the right of any nation to enforce its immigration policies, the partylist emphasizes the potential hardship this would bring to individuals and families who have built their lives in the US.
“The potential uprooting of Filipinos from their homes, work, and communities poses significant challenges, both emotionally and economically,” stated Representative Magsino.
In anticipation of this scenario, the OFW Partylist urges the Philippine government to proactively address the potential consequences of mass deportation. They call for the establishment of comprehensive social safety nets, reintegration programs, and mechanisms for job retraining and employment facilitation. These programs, they argue, should ensure that returning Filipinos have access to opportunities comparable to the jobs they may be forced to leave behind in the US.
The partylist also calls on the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA)to ensure that due process is fully observed for Filipinos facing deportation, including access to hearings and the right to appeal.
“We strongly believe that the United States is a nation that values fairness and justice, and that these principles will be upheld as they impose stricter immigration policies possibly leading to deportation processes,” said Representative Magsino.
The OFW Partylist reiterates their commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of Filipinos both in the Philippines and abroad, regardless of the outcome of the potential deportation situation.
