NCRPO Chief Hernia relieved for 10 days amid extortion allegations

admin November 7, 2024

NATIONAL Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO) chief Police Major General Sidney Hernia has been temporarily relieved of his duties for 10 days, effective Thursday, following an extortion complaint filed against him as reported by television news program.

This change in command comes as a result of allegations that Hernia was involved in an extortion scheme. The allegations stem from a police raid conducted on October 30th, where four Chinese citizens claim they were arrested and then pressured to pay P1 million each for their release and legal representation.

The temporary relief of Hernia allows for a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations.

The order for Hernia’s relief came from Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Rommel Marbil after four Chinese citizens alleged they were extorted by police officers during a raid on an alleged scam hub in Manila on October 30. The foreigners claimed they were arrested during the raid and subsequently pressured to pay P1 million each for their release and legal representation, allegedly connected to NCRPO higher-ups.

In addition to administrative charges, the Chinese complainants have requested the preventive suspension of Hernia to prevent potential influence on the investigation.

Hernia, however, has vehemently denied the extortion allegations against him and 14 other NCRPO officers. In a statement released on Monday, he described the accusations as “absurd and unfounded.”

“The NCRPO is fully cooperating with the investigation and I will not tolerate any wrongdoing within our ranks,” Hernia stated. “This is an opportunity for the truth to prevail, and I am confident that the investigation will reveal that all procedures followed were lawful and proper.”

He reiterated the NCRPO’s commitment to combating criminality and protecting the public from fraudulent activities. “We stand ready to clear our names and reinforce our dedication to integrity and service,” Hernia added.

The 10-day relief of Hernia allows for a thorough and impartial investigation into the extortion allegations. The outcome of the investigation will determine the next steps in the case and the future of Hernia’s position within the NCRPO.
