SENATOR Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero stepped in as new Senate President after Senator Juan Miguel ‘Migz’ Zubiri stepped down from the leadership on Monday.
In a privilege speech, Zubiri announced his decision to step down from the Senate leadership. He said he will remain as an “independent member” of the Upper Chamber.
“Today, I offer my resignation as Senate President, and upon stepping down, I vow to serve as an independent member of the Senate—my allegiance, as ever, belonging to no one but the people,” Zubiri said.
“I leave with my head held high, knowing I did what is right for the Senate and for the nation. I wish our new leadership the very best, and I pray that they will be steadfast in upholding the independence of our beloved institution,” the outgoing Senate chief added.
Senator Joel Villanueva also stepped down from his role as Senate Majority Leader. He sent a message to reporters “signing off” to confirm the news.
Villanueva said an advisory was issued concerning the leadership change at the Senate.
According to Senator Juan Edgardo Angara, there are 15 senators who voted to oust Zubiri.
Escudero and Senator Alan Peter Cayetano met with Zubiri concerning this development.
Under a new leadership, all Senate committees will be declared vacant.
