Free at last! 146 PDLs granted freedom

admin October 28, 2023

A TOTAL of 146 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from seven prison facilities under the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) were granted their freedom as part of the 7th Culminating Program in celebration of the 29th National Correctional Consciousness Week (NCCW).

Held at the BuCor national headquarters in Muntinlupa City, the culminating program adopted the theme “The Correctional Community: Journeying together in Mutual Support on a Mission of Love” and received a warm welcome from Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, Public Attorney’s Office Chief Persida Acosta, and various Parole and Corrections officials.

Since August 25, 2023, a total of 949 PDLs have been released from Corrections facilities. This achievement is the outcome of a synchronized culminating program conducted by the External Affairs Section (EAS) across all Prison and Penal Farms (PPFs). These PPFs include 78 at New Bilibid Prison (NBP), 1 at NBP Extension Facility, 15 at Correctional Institution for Women (CIW), 10 at Leyte Regional Prison (LRP), 4 at Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF), 4 at Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF), 6 at San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF), and 28 at Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF).

The majority of the released PDLs were granted freedom due to the Expiration of Maximum Sentence with Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA), while others were released based on Acquittal, Parole, and Expiration of Maximum Sentence with GCTA (D.O. 652) criteria.

During the program, a former PDL delivered an inspiring speech to the audience, followed by a 45-minute video presentation showcasing the success stories of released PDLs throughout the bureau.

The program also included the distribution of prison discharge certifications, grooming kits, and gratuity and transportation allowances. Furthermore, the BuCor family extended its heartfelt gratitude and recognition to the benefactors for their invaluable contributions to the bureau’s mission
