THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced a significant increase in the student fare discount for the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 lines.
Effective immediately, students are now entitled to a 50% discount on their fares. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon stated that students only need to present a valid school ID or proof of enrollment at the ticket booth to avail of the discount.
This expanded benefit covers students at all levels, from basic education and college to master’s degree and law school programs. The increase from the previous 20% discount was mandated by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., aiming to provide substantial relief to students amidst rising daily expenses.
Secretary Dizon further emphasized the significant impact this increased discount will have on students and their families.
The 50% discount applies to single-journey tickets, offering considerable savings for the thousands of students who rely on these train lines daily.
While currently limited to single-journey tickets, the DOTr is exploring options to expand the discount to other fare types. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to making public transportation more accessible and affordable for students, recognizing the financial burden faced by many in pursuing their education.
The DOTr’s announcement is a welcome development, providing much-needed relief to students and their families.
