Residents cautions as Pangasinan experiences severe thunderstorms

LINGAYEN City, Pangasinan – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Pangasinan today cautioned residents to avoid going outside during a thunderstorm and stay indoors for their safety.

Lighting often strikes people who are outside or engage in outdoor activities. Recent reports of people being struck occurred in various municipalities of the province during the past weeks.

For everyone’s safety, the Pangasinan PDRRMO issued important reminders for people to follow during a thunderstorm.

Remember that when thunder roars, go indoors quickly! Remove yourself from danger immediately. Find a safe, enclosed shelter such as homes, offices, shopping centers, and hard-top vehicles with the windows rolled up.

If you are on an open field, never lie flat on the ground. Crouch down in a ball-like position with your head tucked and hands over your ears so that you are down low with minimal contact with the ground.

Never shelter under an isolated tree. Immediately get out of and away from ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water.

Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (such as barbed wire fences, power lines, or windmills).

If you are in a group during a thunderstorm, separate from each other. This will reduce the number of injuries if lightning strikes the ground.

If you are on a motorcycle, get out of the road and seek shelter immediately.

Stay away from tall structures, such as telephone poles and trees; lightning tends to strike the tallest object around.

“Better to be safe than be struck by lightning,” Pangasinan PDRRMO said.
