New tropical depression forms west of Micronesia; may enter PAR next week

admin May 5, 2026

THE low-pressure area previously monitored west of Micronesia has intensified into a full-fledged tropical depression, according to the latest data from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Designated as Invest #93W, the weather system has developed sustained winds of up to 55 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts reaching as high as 70 kilometers per hour. It is currently moving in a west-northwest direction at a steady speed of 15 kilometers per hour.

Based on current forecasts, the system is likely to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) sometime next week. Once inside the country’s jurisdiction, it is projected to move closer to the eastern sections of the Bicol Region or Central Luzon before changing course and curving toward the southern part of Japan. While it is still too early to determine its exact path and intensity upon arrival, authorities are closely tracking its development as conditions can shift quickly.

Members of the public are advised to stay updated on possible changes in the weather outlook in the coming days. Residents, especially those living in low-lying areas and mountainous provinces, are urged to prepare and remain alert against potential hazards such as sudden flooding and landslides that may be triggered by heavy rains associated with the approaching cyclone. Safety precautions and readiness are strongly encouraged to minimize risks as the system nears the country.
