THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has issued a warning for 23 areas across the country expected to experience a “dangerous” heat index on Thursday.

Six areas are forecast to reach the highest heat index of 43°C, while Pagasa notes that Cuyo, Palawan, recorded a scorching 45°C on Wednesday.

A “dangerous” heat index, ranging from 42°C to 51°C, poses significant health risks.

The areas under this warning include Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Bacnotan, La Union; Aparri, Cagayan; Iba, Zambales; Tayabas City, Quezon; and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro (all forecast at 43°C). Numerous other locations are also predicted to experience heat indices of 42°C, including several cities and municipalities across Luzon and Visayas. A full list of the affected areas is available in Pagasa’s updated bulletin.

Pagasa strongly advises residents in these areas to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible under these conditions, and prolonged sun exposure can lead to heat stroke.

The agency urges the public to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms of heatstroke.

The extreme heat is expected to continue, highlighting the need for ongoing vigilance and preventative measures.
