Speaker, House leaders, fete Filipinas for ‘historic’ FIFA match win vs New Zealand

admin August 2, 2023

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez led other leaders of the House of Representatives in extending their congratulations to 23 members of the Philippine Women’s National Football Team for winning its July 25 match with New Zealand – one versus zero.

On behalf of the institution and their colleagues, the House officials said the “historic victory elevates the ranking of the Philippines and increases its chances to enter the qualifying matches beyond their group stage” in the prestigious FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The “historic first win” of Filipinas is a “latest triumphant accomplishment” and a “clear testament to the Filipino women’s strength and determination to excel in sports at the global stage” like the 2023 Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

The House leaders congratulated and commended the team for displaying their “exemplary performance” and for “inspiring women and Filipino athletes of the next generation, and epitomizing the determination and passion bringing honor and pride to the nation.”

“The 23 spirited Filipinas deserve utmost recognition and commendation,” the adopted House Resolution (HR) No. HR 1145 read.

It was signed by the Speaker, Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzales, Majority Leader Manuel Jose Dalipe, Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan, Senior Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Marcos and Reps. Yedda Marie Romualdez and Jude Acidre, both of party-list Tingog.

HR No. 1145 was approved in consolidation with HR Nos. 1134 and 1137.

The match, held at the Wellington Regional Stadium in New Zealand, was recorded as the country’s first-ever goal in the competition’s history.

The administration lawmakers said the brave Filipinas team members should be credited for placing the Philippines “at the forefront of world recognition” and should be recognized and named for their “sterling performance.”

They are Sarina Bolden, Hali Long, Olivia McDaniel, Tahnai Annis, Quinley Quezada, Katrina Guillou, Chandler McDaniel, Carleigh Frilles, Isabella Flanigan, Meryll Serrano, Sara Eggesvik. Ryley Bugay, Jaclyn Sawicki, Anicka Castañeda, Jessika Cowart, Dominique Randle, Sofia Harrison, Malea Cesar, Alicia Barker, Angela Beard, Reina Bonta, Kiara Fontanilla and Kaiya Jota.
