REPRESENTATIVE Joel Chua of Third District of Manila (Northern Manila Districts of Binondo, Quiapo, San Nicolas, and Santa Cruz) expressed dismay over erring coach on Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) which showed physical and mental assault on one of his players during a game.
“As a proponent and organizer of community-level sports competitions, I always emphasize player’s welfare and sportsmanship. The true intention of every “paliga” is fostering the value of sportsmanship. What happened at one Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) game was disappointing at the very least and can be characterized by some as physical and mental assault,” said Chua.
He also called on Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro and of former Senator Manny Pacquiao to find the right solutions to the unsportsmanlike and ungentlemanly conduct displayed by the erring coach.
The Games and Amusement Board should also exercise some oversight when bullying-like incidents like that happen, he added.
“My heart goes out to the player, Felipe Chavez, who was on the receiving end of that bad behavior. I hope the team management is able to execute the appropriate mental health and group health interventions,” Chua said.
Chua also asked for a circumspect assessment in order that involves not only the erring coach and his team, but also other teams engaged in the MPBL This latest incident is just the latest in the young history of MPBL.
