SPORTS enthusiasts in Las Piñas City had a field day recently during the awarding of the top winners in the second Villar Cup that was led by Congresswom Camille Villar at the Villar Coliseum.
The Villar Cup is an inter-barangay sports initiative of Rep. Camille and Senators Cynthia and Mark Villar aimed at promoting post-pandemic physical activity to improve the overall health and well-being of Las Piñas constituents.
Big winners in this year’s tournaments were Barangay Talon Uno, which emerged as the champion in the basketball league, and Barangay BF Intl/CAA, which brough home the gold trophy in the volleyball league.
Barangay Talon Uno was awarded a P50,000 cash prize, while runners-up Barangays Pamplona Uno and Daniel Uno got P30,000 and P20,000 respectively.
Cager Errol Bongay from Barangay Talon Dos was named Most Valuable Player (MVP), while players Glen Lorete (Brgy. Daniel Fajardo), Melchon Palmon (Brgy. Talon Uno), Yuan Trinidad (Brgy. Pamplona Uno), Mario Abitan (Brgy. Talon Dos), and Martin Romero (Brgy. Talon Dos) were named the league’s Mythical 5 for their exemplary performance.
In the mixed volleyball league, Barangay BF Intl/CAA got a P30,000 cash pot for emerging as the top team, while P20,000 and P10,000 each was given to Barangays Talon Uno and Pamplona respectively for lending the first runner-up and second runner-up finish.
Spiker Jefferson Galo was awarded the MVP award, while
Katrina Cajeda (BF Intl/CAA), Lyka Perez (Talon Uno), Janeth Torres (Talon Uno), Daryll Herbas (Pamplona Uno), Ivan Ibañez (Talon Singko) and Rogelio Clara (BF Intl/CAA) were named as the Mythical 6.
Rep. Camille donated additional cash prizes for the top two barangays and matched the championship team prize of P30,000 for the volleyball league and P50,000 for the basketball league.
The additional cash prized will be donated to the team’s chosen charity in their respective barangays.
“Congratulations sa ating mga winning barangays! Ang Villar Cup ay proyektong handog para sa mga Las Piñeros ng aming pamilya. Sinisimbolo nito ang pangarap na binibigay natin para sa buong lungsod, lalo na sa ating mga kabataan, dahil sila ang mag dadala ng apoy na magliliwanag para sa ating kinabukasan,” Rep Camille said.
In her short talk, Rep. Camille also announced the holding of the Villar Cup 2024 Inter-Barangay Mobile Legends Tournament soon.
Asia’s “Limitless Star” Julie Anne San Jose and the UPHSD Pep Squad performed during the intermission periods.
The basketball and volleyball leagues were participated in by children and young adults aged 12 to 25 years old from the city’s 20 barangays. After the opening ceremonies in October last year, elimination games were held in the different courts of Las Piñas.
