PH volleyball team advances to SEAG semis

admin May 11, 2023

IN a thrilling display of dominance, the Philippine women’s national volleyball team secured their spot in the semifinals of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.

Adding to the excitement was the much-anticipated return of volleyball superstar Alyssa Valdez, who played a pivotal role in the team’s resounding victory over Singapore.

With their eyes set on ending a long podium drought, the Filipinas showcased their skill and determination in a convincing straight-set victory, 25-17, 25-14, and 25-13, at the Indoor Olympic Stadium on Tuesday night.

Having already secured a win against Indonesia in their previous match, the Filipinas entered the game with confidence and determination. Their seamless coordination and powerful attacks put them on the path to success from the very beginning. As the match progressed, Valdez, who had been eagerly awaited by fans, made her long-awaited return to the court.

Valdez’s presence on the team injected an extra dose of energy and enthusiasm, as she took to the court in place of middle blocker Dell Palomata during the first set, with the Filipinas leading 19-13. Her impact was immediate, and the team quickly closed out the set with a comfortable 25-17 scoreline.

In the second set, the Filipinas continued to dominate, showcasing their tactical prowess and agility. Their precise serves and solid defense left the Singaporean opponents struggling to keep up. With a powerful display of offensive firepower, the Filipinas secured a lopsided 25-14 win, leaving the crowd in awe of their skills.

Entering the third set with a commanding 2-0 lead, the Filipinas exhibited no signs of complacency. They unleashed a relentless assault on Singapore, taking advantage of every opportunity to widen the gap. With the scoreboard showing a commanding 24-13 lead, it was Valdez who delivered the final blow, earning the match-winning point for the team. The stadium erupted in cheers as the Filipinas celebrated their victory and Valdez’s triumphant return to international competition.

With this victory, the Philippine women’s national volleyball team has secured the second seed in Group B, boasting a 2-1 win-loss record. However, their journey is far from over, as they now prepare to face either Thailand or Indonesia in the semifinals.

The Filipinas are determined to end their 18-year podium drought at the Southeast Asian Games, and their performance so far has given fans hope for a historic achievement. Courtesy: pvl.ph
