PBA Player John Amores surrenders, faces attempted murder charge after shooting incident

admin September 26, 2024

PBA player John Amores surrendered to authorities early Thursday morning after being involved in a shooting incident in Laguna.

Amores, accompanied by his brother, turned himself in at around 2 a.m.

While declining to comment on camera, Amores is facing a charge of attempted murder and will undergo an inquest proceeding later today.

According to investigations, the incident stemmed from an argument between Amores and the victim, identified as Lee Cacalda, during a basketball game in Barangay Salac.

“They had a disagreement about a call,” stated an investigating officer. “They challenged each other to a fight in Barangay Salac. Amores left first, but the victim followed him. They met again in Barangay Maytalang, where they challenged each other to fight again. This time, John Amores was carrying a gun and fired at the victim.”

Despite the gunshot, Cacalda sustained no injuries. Amores discarded the weapon before surrendering, citing “threats” to his and his brother’s safety as the reason.

“He voluntarily surrendered at our station because… they were receiving threats to their lives. That was their decision because they are worried about their safety,” stated a police official.

This incident follows a previous altercation in 2022, when Amores, then a Jose Rizal University player, was seen punching a player from the College of Saint Benilde during an NCAA game. The incident led to his suspension and widespread public scrutiny.
