Alex Eala upsets defending champ Swiatek to reach Wimbledon round of 16

Metrosundaily July 5, 2026

HAVING already advanced further than any Filipino player in Grand Slam history, Alexandra “Alex” Eala has once again proven that there is no limit to what she can achieve.

The 21‑year‑old tennis star delivered a career‑defining performance on Saturday, pulling off a stunning upset against defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland on the prestigious Centre Court at Wimbledon. After a tightly contested battle, Eala claimed victory with a score of 7‑6(9), 6‑2, ending Swiatek’s title defense and advancing to the Round of 16 — marking the deepest run of her young career at any major tournament.

The first set alone was a test of endurance and mental strength, lasting nearly an hour and a half. Eala built an early advantage, reaching match point at 5‑3, but Swiatek fought back fiercely to force a tiebreak. In the decider, Eala surged to a 5‑2 lead, only to see the six‑time Grand Slam winner level the score at 9‑9. It was two unforced forehand errors from Swiatek that finally handed the opening set to the determined Filipina, setting the tone for the rest of the match.

Eala carried her momentum into the second set, quickly taking control and racing to a commanding 4‑0 lead. Though Swiatek managed to win the next two games to keep her hopes alive, Eala refused to let the match slip away. She took Game 7 with authority and survived a grueling eighth game that featured six deuces, ultimately sealing the win with a powerful left‑handed forehand winner. This victory marked her second win over Swiatek, following their previous meeting at the 2025 Miami Open.

Despite the historic win, Eala remained humble and gracious in her post‑match remarks, showing deep respect for her opponent. “I don’t know how to describe it. I mean, I’ve been to the second week of a slam and it’s amazing for me. Iga is a phenomenal player and a really nice person,” she said. “So I’m really grateful to be able to share Centre Court with her at Wimbledon nonetheless.” With this win, Eala moves on to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 16, carrying the hopes and pride of Filipino tennis fans worldwide.
