THE number of individuals reported dead in the aftermath of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) has tragically risen to over a hundred, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
The NDRRMC’s latest situational report, issued on Monday morning, October 28, 2024, indicated that of the 116 reported fatalities, 10 have been validated, while the remaining are still under verification.
The storm also resulted in 39 reported missing individuals and 109 injured.
Kristine’s impact has been widespread, affecting 6.7 million people, or 1.6 million families, across 10,147 barangays nationwide. Of these, 980,355 individuals were displaced and sought refuge in 6,286 evacuation centers.
The storm caused significant damage to agriculture, estimated at P2.5 billion, and infrastructure, amounting to P1.5 billion. A total of 3,004 houses were completely destroyed across the country, while 41,533 sustained partial damage.
Transportation has been severely affected, with 676 roads and 96 bridges rendered impassable for motorists.
Following the storm’s onslaught, 160 cities and municipalities have declared a state of calamity. In-person classes were suspended in 1,167 cities and municipalities, while 782 implemented work suspensions.
The NDRRMC has provided over P658.7 million in assistance to affected residents.
