A 73‑year‑old American marine biologist was killed in a brazen late‑night attack at his residence in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, police confirmed.
Identified as Kent Edward Carpenter, the victim was inside his living room watching television with his Filipino companion around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday when three unidentified men forced their way into the property. One of the intruders shot Carpenter in the head before the group fled immediately from the scene. His 34‑year‑old companion sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical care while undergoing forensic evaluation.
Authorities have yet to establish a clear motive for the killing, and are exploring all possible angles as the inquiry moves forward. To speed up proceedings, the Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region (PRO‑NIR) has formed the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Carpenter, dedicated exclusively to solving the case. Investigators are now processing forensic evidence, reviewing CCTV footage from the area, interviewing potential witnesses, cross‑checking intelligence leads, and retracing the movements of the suspects before and after the shooting.
PRO‑NIR Regional Director Brigadier General Romano Cardiño strongly denounced the attack as a “senseless act of violence,” and vowed to pursue every available legal channel to identify and arrest those responsible. “We assure the victim’s family, the community, and our foreign visitors that this case is being treated with utmost urgency, and no effort will be spared until justice is served,” Cardiño stated.
Police are also coordinating with national law enforcement agencies and foreign liaison offices to track down the perpetrators, and have called on anyone with information about the incident to contact the Sibulan Municipal Police Station or the nearest police unit.
