Two students killed in Ateneo de Zamboanga shooting; gunman streamed attack live

Metrosundaily August 18, 2026

A TRAGIC shooting incident unfolded on Tuesday morning at Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City, claiming the lives of two students — including the alleged gunman who later took his own life.

Mayor Kymer Olaso confirmed the details in an interview, stating the attack took place at approximately 8:30 a.m. According to initial reports, the shooter — a student — entered the campus carrying a high‑powered firearm and a .45‑caliber pistol, and was also wearing a body camera that streamed the incident live online.

Based on footage reviewed by authorities, the gunman first targeted a teacher sitting at a desk but apparently missed. He then moved to another room, drew his .45‑caliber pistol, and shot a fellow student, who fell and later died — the second fatality of the incident.

Two other individuals are also believed to have sustained injuries during the attack. After carrying out the shootings, the suspect ended his own life on school grounds. Mayor Olaso immediately suspended classes for the remainder of the morning as security and law enforcement secured the premises.

The university and local government have assured the public that the situation is now under control and that appropriate security measures are being reinforced. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information or graphic footage that may cause further distress, and rely only on official updates from the city government, the police, and school administration.

A full investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack and how the suspect was able to bring firearms onto school property.
