THREE children lost their lives by drowning off the shores of Barangay Navotas, Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, on August 20, according to police reports.
The tragedy occurred during what was meant to be a joyful family gathering, casting deep sorrow over the community and leaving relatives in mourning. Authorities have yet to release the exact ages and names of the victims, pending notification of all immediate family members.
The group had gathered at a coastal area to celebrate an advance birthday of a family member, accompanied by their parents and other relatives.
What began as a festive occasion turned tragic when the children were swept away or encountered difficulty while in the water. Witnesses and family members reportedly rushed to their aid, and the victims were immediately brought to shore and rushed to a nearby medical facility, but they could not be revived.
Local authorities are reminding the public to exercise extreme caution, especially when children are near bodies of water, and to observe safety precautions even in familiar coastal areas. The incident has prompted calls for heightened vigilance among beachgoers, particularly during periods of inclement weather or when sea conditions appear unsafe. Local officials are also looking into whether strong currents or sudden waves contributed to the tragedy, as the community grieves the loss of three young lives.
