THE Tabaco City Council has declared a state of calamity due to the continued unrest of Mayon Volcano.
According to the resolution dated January 20, the declaration is necessary because residents within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) have been ordered to evacuate while Mayon remains at Alert Level 3.
The state of calamity allows the local government to use the Quick Response Fund under the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (LDRRMF) for disaster response operations.
According to the resolution, 489 families or 1,787 individuals have evacuated in Tabaco City, which is the highest number of internally displaced persons in the entire province of Albay. Alert Level 3 was raised on Mayon due to the threat of pyroclastic density currents.
