THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has recovered and secured an unidentified object believed to be part of a rocket, after it was found along the shore of Barangay Babuyan Claro in Calayan, Cagayan.
According to the PCG, a resident spotted the object in Sitio Naydi around 12:30 p.m. and initially kept it for safekeeping. Personnel from the Philippine Navy Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit later retrieved the item before it was turned over to the Coast Guard for examination.
PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab stated that no identifying markings have yet been found on the object to confirm it is indeed rocket debris.
“They secured the object in a safe location while awaiting further technical assessment by the appropriate authorities,” Cayabyab said. The Coast Guard is now coordinating with relevant government agencies to determine the object’s origin and nature, as part of its efforts to maintain maritime safety and security.
Authorities have also issued a public advisory, urging fishermen and coastal residents not to touch or handle any unknown objects they may find floating in the waters or washed ashore.
“We also advise fisherfolk and coastal residents to avoid handling unidentified floating objects and to immediately report similar sightings to the nearest local authorities,” Cayabyab added, emphasizing the importance of caution until proper assessment can be conducted.
