THE partial closure of the San Juanico Bridge, a critical link between Leyte and Samar islands, continues to disrupt transportation and commerce in Eastern Visayas. TINGOG Party-list, in collaboration with the Office of House Speaker Martin Romualdez, is spearheading a multi-agency effort to mitigate the impact and restore full connectivity.
Following a May 17, 2025, consultative meeting involving over 30 national government agencies – including the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Budget and Management (DBM), Office of Civil Defense (OCD), and others – a coordinated response is underway.
Significant progress has been made in several key areas:
- Alternative Transportation Routes: The DPWH and MARINA are working together to develop and improve alternative transport routes and ports. The Amandayehan Port in Basey, Samar, is being prepared for Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) operations.
- Ro-Ro Vessel Deployment: The LCT Aldain Dowey, the first Ro-Ro vessel to operate in the San Juanico Strait, has been deployed by Sta. Clara Shipping Corporation. This is expected to significantly alleviate the logistical challenges imposed by the bridge’s 3-ton weight limit. Further permits for additional Sta. Clara Shipping vessels have been approved, with ongoing coordination with the PPA and MARINA to finalize docking arrangements and activate alternative maritime routes.
- Free Transportation Services: TINGOG, in partnership with the DPWH, has launched a 24-hour free ride service for affected passengers and commuters.
- Emergency Support: Temporary passenger terminals and assistance centers are being established on both sides of the bridge, providing shelter, basic necessities, and emergency assistance. This initiative involves the DSWD, OCD, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and local City/Municipal Social Welfare and Development Offices (CSWDOs).
While the San Juanico Bridge remains partially closed, the collaborative efforts of TINGOG Party-list, the Office of Speaker Romualdez, and numerous government agencies are focused on minimizing disruption and ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities and businesses.
