Phivolcs: 138 aftershocks recorded since magnitude 7.8 Mindanao quake

Metrosundaily June 8, 2026

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that a total of 138 aftershocks have been detected as of 11:00 a.m. on Monday, following the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani in Mindanao. The agency continues to monitor seismic activity closely as tremors persist hours after the main shock was recorded.

Of all the aftershocks captured by monitoring instruments, 47 have been successfully located and pinpointed to specific areas, while nine were strong enough to be felt by residents across affected regions. The intensity of these subsequent quakes varies significantly, with magnitudes ranging from as low as 1.3 up to a strong 6.7, reminding communities that seismic activity remains active in the area.

To help visualize the extent of the activity, Phivolcs released a detailed map plotting all earthquake events linked to the major offshore tremor. The data used to generate this map was gathered from two key facilities: the General Santos Seismic Station and the Don Marcelino Seismic Station in Davao Occidental, which serve as primary monitoring points for ground movement in the southern part of the country.

Authorities continue to advise the public to remain vigilant, prepare for possible additional aftershocks, and follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents or injuries. Residents are also urged to stay updated through official bulletins, as seismic patterns may change and further information on the quake’s impact and behavior will be released as analysis progresses.
