THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) destroyed over P5.32 billion worth of seized illegal drugs on Tuesday at a waste management facility in Trece Martires City.
The destruction, the first under the leadership of PDEA Director General Undersecretary Isagani Nerez, involved 2,227.7584 kg of solid and 3,447.0920 ml of liquid illegal drugs, including methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu), marijuana, MDMA (ecstasy), cocaine, and other substances. The contraband also included assorted surrendered and expired medicines.
Among the destroyed drugs was 404.9515 kg of shabu confiscated in a January 23rd interdiction operation at the Port of Manila. The thermal decomposition process, or thermolysis, ensured the complete destruction of the seized items, preventing any possibility of recycling or resale.
Director General Nerez emphasized the transparency of the operation, aligning with the “Bagong Pilipinas” program championed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“Stacked inside a chamber, the dangerous drugs were burned beyond recovery,” Nerez stated. “PDEA promotes transparency where its actions are open to the Filipino people…The public deserves nothing less than our utmost diligence and integrity.”
The destruction ceremony was witnessed by representatives from various law enforcement agencies, government departments, NGOs, and media outlets.
