POLICE reported the chief of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Zamboanga Sibugay was killed after allegedly shooting himself in the chest.
Akmat Sampang was dead when his body was found by his partner on Saturday evening, July 23, inside their house in Ipil town. Police said Sampang, who was allegedly cleaning his pistol, told the woman, whose name was not made public, to buy coconut juice.
The woman told police investigators that when she returned home, she saw the 59-year old Sampang sprawled on the floor, his chest bloodied. She sought help from neighbors to bring him to the hospital.
“Upon returning home, she was surprised when the victim was already lying with blood from a gunshot wound in his chest while his issued firearm was beside him.
The live-in partner of the victim immediately asked for assistance from her neighbors. They hired a tricycle and immediately rushed the victim to Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Alrasid Sauti, the attending physician,” said Maj. Shellamie Chang, regional police spokeswoman.
It was unclear whether Sampang committed suicide or not. No other details were made available by the police.
