AN international manhunt for an Australian fugitive wanted in Indonesia for drug smuggling ended in Bogo, Cebu province, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
Gregor Johann Haas, 46, reportedly the father of popular Australian rugby player Payne Haas, was arrested by BI operatives on May 15 on the strength of a red notice from the Interpol, which stemmed from a criminal complaint filed by Indonesian authorities.
Haas is a “high-profile fugitive for being an alleged member of the Sinaloa cartel, a large international organized crime syndicate based in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico that specializes in drug trafficking and money laundering activities,” according to BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco.
Indonesian authorities said Haas allegedly tried to smuggle a shipment of floor ceramics filled with more than five kilos of methamphetamine into Indonesia in December.
“The drugs were seized by Indonesian authorities who later discovered via testimonies elicited from arrested drug couriers that the packages were sent by Haas from Guadalajara, Mexico,” the bureau said.
Haas was flown from Cebu province to a BI facility at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City pending deportation proceedings, according to the BI.
