Eastern Visayas holds Mass honoring Pope Francis’ legacy

admin April 26, 2025

TACLOBAN CITY – Thousands of people are gathering at the New Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport tarmac in Tacloban City today for a solemn Mass honoring the life and legacy of Pope Francis.

The location holds profound significance, as it was the same site where Pope Francis himself celebrated an outdoor Mass on January 17, 2015, amidst torrential rain and strong winds brought by Tropical Storm Amang. That Mass, held in the wake of the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) on November 8, 2013, offered comfort and hope to a grieving nation.

The Mass serves as a poignant tribute to the late pontiff’s profound impact on Eastern Visayas and the world. Pope Francis’ visit to the region in the aftermath of Yolanda was widely seen as a powerful symbol of solidarity and spiritual healing. His presence offered solace to survivors and inspired a renewed sense of hope in the face of unimaginable loss.

The event is expected to draw a large crowd, reflecting the enduring reverence and affection felt for Pope Francis in the region. Many attendees are survivors of Typhoon Yolanda, who remember vividly the Pope’s visit and its impact on their lives. The Mass will provide an opportunity for reflection, prayer, and communal remembrance of the Pope’s message of compassion and resilience.

The Mass at the airport tarmac serves not only as a commemoration of Pope Francis’ life but also as a testament to the enduring spirit of Eastern Visayas and its people, who continue to rebuild and recover from the devastation of Yolanda, guided by the Pope’s message of faith and hope.
