THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) has called on NLEX Corporation to waive toll fees at areas affected by severe traffic congestion caused by an accident at the Marilao Interchange Bridge. DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon insisted that tolls should not be collected while repairs are underway, which are expected to take two to three weeks.
NLEX Corporation acknowledged the significant traffic delays, with congestion reaching seven to eight kilometers during rush hour. The accident occurred when a truck, failing to use the designated truck lane, collided with the bridge, resulting in the temporary closure of two northbound lanes at the Marilao Interchange.
NLEX also stated that they had contacted the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and local authorities regarding the reduced vertical clearance of the bridge due to asphalt overlays. However, both agencies denied jurisdiction over the bridge.
The DOTr’s demand for toll fee suspension highlights the frustration of motorists affected by the ongoing traffic disruption. The incident raises questions about the responsibility for maintaining the bridge and the adequacy of safety measures in place.
