THE Philippine Coast Guard has installed oil spill booms and absorbent bags to contain the spill from MV Hong Hai 189 that eventually sank approximately 400 yards from Sisiman Lighthouse in Mariveles, Bataan.
“The sunken vessel released approximately 30 to 50 liters of fuel and other mixed substances,” the PCG said on Saturday, Personnel from the PCG Station Bataan and Marine Environmental Protection Unit (MEPU) installed oil spill booms and absorbent bags to contain the spill.
The PCG said no additional traces of oil spill were observed in the vicinity waters of Mariveles.
“They continue to monitor the situation for further measures,” the PCG said.
It can be recalled that MW Hong Hai collided with Marshall Island-flagged oil tanker MT Petite Soeur off Corregidor Island Las April 28.
Three crew members of the dredger died due to the collision, 15 were rescued, while two others remained missing.
The leakage from the sunken dredger is being contained by the PCG even as clean-up operations are ongoing in Oriental Mindoro due to an earlier oil spill caused by the sinking of motor tanker (MT) Princess Empress.
