8 injured in Bulacan fireworks factory blast

admin November 3, 2022

CAMP General Alejo S Santos, City of Malolos, Bulacan — At least eight people were wounded in a fireworks factory explosion in Manggahan, Pulong Buhangin, Sta. Maria, Bulacan at about 1 pm on Thursday.

Based on a report from Santa Maria Municipal Police Station, PCol Relly Arnedo, Provincial Director of Bulacan Police Provincial Office, identified the eight victims of the explosion as Monrenzo Victoria and Marissa Victoria, operators of the aforementioned fireworks manufacturing site; Jessie Cruz; and Lourdes Policarpio were all taken to Rogaciano Mercado Hospital. Similarly, Teofila Horfilla, Mary Ann Horfilla, Amanda Vicente, fireworks employees, and Christine Amper were treated at a local health clinic.

Monrenzo Victoria, one of the eight victims, was seriously hurt.

Investigation revealed that the explosion was triggered when the tip of the fireworks item they are making began to produce smoke and sparkles and was accidentally tossed, alarming the two employees.

The investigation also revealed that the maker of the pyrotechnics was operating illegally.

A week prior to the explosion, Arnedo initiated a dialogue with the Philippine Pyrotechnics Manufacturers and Dealers Association of Bulacan to provide manufacturers, distributors/dealers/retailers with a clearer picture and to remind them of the importance of safety in the manufacture, distribution, sale, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

Appropriate criminal complaints will be prepared for filing in court against the proprietors of the aforementioned fireworks manufacturers.

Arnedo said that it is a very important factor that we cannot just deliberately ignore the various incidents that were caused by conspicuous neglect of safety standards and violations of rules and regulations.

A sudden incident like this, with injuries and possible loss of lives and livelihoods, could have been prevented if only extraordinary diligence had been observed. (PIO, Bulacan PPO)
