SEVENTY one passengers from a roll on/roll off ferry that ran aground have been rescued by Philippine Coast Guard personnel on Capul Island, Northern Samar on Sunday.
In a statement, MV Reina Hosanna was sailing for Matnog, Sorsogon from Allen in Northern Samar when it experienced engine failure that left it dead in the water on Sunday night.
Batangas-headquartered operator Marina Ferries sent MV Reina Immaculada to tow MV Reina Hosanna to safety, but, the PCG said, the mooring line was severed in the attempt.
“The said incident followed by strong currents caused MV Reina Hosanna to run aground along the shoreline of Barangay 1, Capul, Northern Samar,” the coast guard said.
The coast guard as well as local disaster responders managed to rescue the 71 passengers.
The coast guard said Monday morning that it is monitoring MV Reina Hosanna, which still has 30 “rolling cargoes”, or vehicles, inside.
