SIX foreign nationals and two Filipinos were apprehended on Grande Island, Subic Bay, for alleged involvement in espionage and kidnapping activities.
The Department of National Defense (DND) confirmed the arrests, identifying the suspects as five Chinese, one Cambodian, and two Filipinos. They were apprehended for violations of the Securities Regulation Code and the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
The DND stated that the arrests exposed illegal activities, including suspected espionage and kidnapping linked to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGO).
These activities, allegedly conducted by foreign nationals under the guise of private enterprises, pose a serious threat to national security, according to the DND. The department believes these activities could be part of larger criminal network operations.
Authorities recovered cellphones, laptops, a 9mm pistol, and 16 rounds of ammunition from the suspects. The DND issued a warning, emphasizing that these activities related to POGO pose a significant threat to national security.
In response to these concerns, the DND is considering declaring Grande and Chiquita Islands as military reservations. This move aims to protect the Subic Freeport Zone, Riviera Wharf, and Subic Bay International Airport from potential security risks.
