THE collision between a Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessel and a Chinese Navy ship in the vicinity of Bajo de Masinloc is, to put it mildly, ironic.
While the details are still emerging, the reported sequence of events—a high-speed chase of a Philippine vessel by the CCG ship, culminating in a collision with a Chinese Navy destroyer— paints a picture of chaotic and reckless behavior.
The fact that the aggressor, the CCG vessel, ended up disabled and reportedly with injured crew members, while the Philippine ship escaped unharmed, has a certain poetic justice to it. It’s a stark reminder that aggressive actions, even within one’s own ranks, can have unintended and damaging consequences. The incident raises serious questions about the coordination and control within the Chinese maritime forces.
