REPRESENTATIVE Ron P. Salo of KABAYAN Partylist extends his heartfelt commendation to the various government agencies, private sector partners, and international allies who played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the 23 Filipino seafarers stranded in the Red Sea following a missile attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on the Greek-flagged MT Sounion.
“I express my deepest gratitude to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and all those who have worked tirelessly to secure the safety of our Filipino seafarers. Their quick response and dedication have been instrumental in protecting the lives of our kababayans,” Rep. Salo said.
In particular, Rep. Salo hailed this as a major achievement for newly-confirmed DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac. “Secretary Cacdac’s leadership has been exemplary, and this successful operation reflects his unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of our overseas workers. This early accomplishment under his stewardship sets a strong tone for the Department’s continued efforts in protecting our migrant workers.”
He also acknowledged the significant contributions of the private sector, including the manning agencies and shipowners, and of the European Union mission, whose collaboration and swift action were critical in managing this crisis. “The concerted efforts of our private sector partners and international allies have been invaluable in ensuring the safety and well-being of our seafarers. Their prompt and coordinated actions are a testament to their unwavering commitment to the protection of OFWs abroad.”
Moreover, Rep. Salo commended the leadership of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Speaker Martin Romualdez, highlighting their leadership roles in mobilizing the necessary resources and support during this challenging time. “The leadership shown by our President and Speaker has been pivotal in navigating this complex situation. Their support underscores the importance of protecting the lives and welfare of our seafarers.”
As the situation progresses, Rep. Salo emphasized the need for thorough preparations for the seafarers’ return to the Philippines. He called on the DMW, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and all relevant agencies to ensure that the necessary assistance is ready to support the seafarers and their families.
“While we are relieved that our seafarers are safe, our work is not yet done. We must ensure that their journey home is smooth and that they receive the comprehensive care they need. This includes medical attention, financial assistance, and access to essential services for them and their families as they recover from this ordeal,” Rep. Salo stated.
He further underscored the importance of involving the Department of Health (DOH) in the process to provide medical support, particularly mental health services, for the returning seafarers. “The trauma these individuals have experienced is significant, and it is imperative that we address not only their physical health but also their mental well-being. The DOH will play a crucial role in ensuring they receive the comprehensive care they need,” Rep. Salo emphasized.
“This incident reminds us of the unpredictable and dangerous conditions our seafarers face. We must remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring their safety and well-being wherever they may be deployed,” Rep. Salo concluded.
