THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) issued a statement on Thursday confirming a second Filipino fatality resulting from the devastating magnitude-7.7 earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28th.

The DFA reported that the Philippine Embassy in Yangon positively identified the remains of the victim. While the DFA refrained from releasing further details out of respect for the family’s wishes, the tragic news underscores the ongoing impact of the earthquake on the Filipino community in Myanmar.

The confirmation of the second fatality follows the announcement on Wednesday of the first Filipino victim, Francis Aragon, a 38-year-old physical education teacher.

A previous report by 24 Oras indicated that Aragon was among four Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who went missing after their condominium building collapsed during the earthquake. His passing serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of the natural disaster.

The DFA’s statement emphasized the department’s commitment to supporting the families of the victims. The agency’s decision to withhold further details demonstrates sensitivity to the bereaved families’ need for privacy during this difficult time.

This approach reflects the DFA’s dedication to providing compassionate support and respect for the wishes of those affected.

The tragic loss of two Filipino lives highlights the significant impact of the Myanmar earthquake on the Filipino community abroad. The DFA continues to work tirelessly to locate and assist the remaining two Filipinos still unaccounted for in Mandalay.

This ongoing search underscores the DFA’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Filipino citizens overseas, even in the face of such devastating events.

The DFA’s efforts to support the families and locate the missing individuals demonstrate a proactive and compassionate response to the crisis.

The agency’s commitment to transparency, while respecting the privacy of the families, provides a reassuring message to the Filipino community both in Myanmar and the Philippines. The ongoing search and support efforts are a testament to the DFA’s dedication to protecting and assisting Filipino citizens abroad.
