FOLLOWING the tragic death of a Filipino worker in Kuwait, Representative Marissa ‘Del Mar’ Magsino representing the OFW party-list, has issued a strong statement condemning the killing and demanding immediate action to ensure the safety and protection of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
Rep. Magsino expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the incident, which has caused widespread grief and anger among Filipinos, particularly in Cagayan de Oro, the deceased worker’s hometown.
Rep. Magsino highlighted that this incident underscores the ongoing vulnerabilities faced by OFWs in countries with inadequate safety and labor protections.
“This tragedy should not be repeated,” Rep. Magsino stated. “Our OFWs, our modern-day heroes, deserve dignity and protection wherever they work. We will continue to fight for their welfare and rights.”
The congresswoman called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the murder, emphasizing the need to bring the perpetrators to justice. Simultaneously, Rep. Magsino urged the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to significantly bolster their protective measures for OFWs in high-risk countries such as Kuwait.
Rep. Magsino pledged to continue advocating for stronger reforms to protect OFWs, including enhanced monitoring of their working conditions, swift responses to reports of abuse and exploitation, and the strengthening of bilateral agreements with host countries to guarantee the safety and well-being of Filipino workers abroad.
The representative’s statement underscores the urgent need for improved safeguards and stronger diplomatic efforts to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of the millions of Filipinos working overseas.
