Pinoy worker freed from death row in Saudi Arabia, repatriated

admin June 13, 2025

THE Philippine government has successfully secured the release and repatriation of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who faced the death penalty in Saudi Arabia for drug possession.

The unnamed OFW, convicted on September 24, 2024, was granted freedom following concerted diplomatic and legal efforts by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

The OFW’s journey to freedom began with his arrest on April 2, 2023, on drug-related charges. He was subsequently detained at the Riyadh Central Jail on September 10, 2023, before receiving his death sentence a year later.

However, persistent efforts by the Philippine government, including a visit to the OFW in Riyadh earlier this year by DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, ultimately led to his release.

The OFW was repatriated to the Philippines on Tuesday and is currently receiving care and support from the OWWA. He is residing temporarily at a Pasay City hotel before returning to his home in Butuan City. Secretary Cacdac emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “This achievement is a testament to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to safeguarding the rights and welfare of our overseas Filipino workers, even in the most challenging circumstances.”

The successful repatriation underscores the Philippine government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and providing assistance in times of crisis.
